ANPR cameras to tackle HGV menace as Kirklees Council takes on police powers to fine drivers

Kirklees Council has taken on police powers to fine drivers for certain traffic offences – and is to trial ANPR cameras at three offending hotspots.

The Department for Transport has granted permission for the council to take on ‘Moving Traffic Enforcement’ meaning it can issue fines for offences such as ignoring a ‘no entry’ sign, going the wrong way down a one-way street or breaching an HGV weight limit.

The council wants to trial the new powers by installing Automatic Number Plate Recognition (ANPR) cameras at three locations – Armitage Road, Armitage Bridge; Barnsley Road, Flockton; and outside Heckmondwike Bus Station on the junction of Westgate and Northgate in Heckmondwike town centre.
